Briefly analyze why we may want to make a concentrated effort to use genderinclusive language
What will be an ideal response?
Gender-inclusive language that communicates respect for others may be a
first step in changing the way our culture negatively stereotypes and devalues women
through communication. We should use gender-inclusive language and avoid the use
of gender-biased language for additional reasons. For example, we know that language
can influence one's self-concept and that language can subtly influence thoughts.
Similarly, competent communicators reject language that is disrespectful or devalues
and excludes others; they understand that language not only reflects but also can
perpetuate cultural attitudes.
