Explain the movement toward political correctness in terms of the attributes of verbal symbols.
What will be an ideal response?
The concept of political correctness is based primarily on the idea that words are powerful. If words had no power, there would be no need to change the way we speak about their referents. Political correctness is also based on the idea that verbal symbols can be denotative or connotative. Think about the difference between the phrases “autistic person” (not preferred) and “person with autism” (preferred). Although they denote the same idea, their connotations are different. The first prioritizes autism, while the second prioritizes the person. Political correctness is thus based on important attributes of verbal symbols.
