List and briefly explain the five forms of argument
What will be an ideal response?
The five forms of argument are example, analogy, cause, deduction, and authority.
Argument by example uses a few instances to assert a broader claim. This is a form of
inductive reasoning. Argument by analogy provides comparisons between two objects or
concepts, arguing that what is true of one will be true of the other. Argument by cause
connects two elements, claiming that one produced another, and can be structured either as
causetoeffect or effecttocause. Argument by deduction moves from general to specific,
arguing that what is true of a general category is true in a particular instance. Finally,
argument by authority uses expert testimony to prove a speaker's claims.
