Hardware should be maintained in a location with appropriate physical access controls. To satisfy disaster recovery needs, frequent backups should be created on media that is stored in a separate, secure physical location.
Logical security is the second dimension to consider. Microsoft recommends that SQL Server be installed on a dedicated server that is not shared with other Windows services such as a domain controller. With two critical applications running on a single server, it becomes difficult to isolate an administrative role to a single application and raises the likelihood that both services will be compromised in the event of a security breach.
