The impact of coparenting on child development has been researched by Sarah Schoppe-
Sullivan.
What model does Schoppe-Sullivan employ in her research? Present two results she
has found in her studies regarding the importance of fathers in child development.
What will be an ideal response?
The research model she employs is the Family Systems Theory. This theory investigates the
interactions of the family as a network rather than as individuals. Two results regarding fathers:
1. When fathers are actively involved with school activities such as PTA and parent teacher
conferences, children have higher academic achievement both with standardized test scores and in
teacher ratings.
2. Regardless of extent of involvementof mother, father is still important.
3. Type of fathering – traditional supportive roleor highly involved, were equal in impact on child.
Both of these were better than uninvolved father.
