One says, "I feel really sorry for their daughter; she would be better off being raised in a single-parent family with no father in the picture rather than in a family with two fathers." The other agrees and adds, "She is going to be all screwed up." Is there research evidence to support any of their claims?

Research shows that children raised by gay and lesbian couples are similar to children raised in heterosexual families in many ways. Later on, children whose parents are gay are no more likely to be homosexual, suggesting that they do not learn sexual orientation via modeling. Given the many stressors that single parents face and the risk factors for children in terms of poorer academic achievement and behavior problems, gay parents may be able to provide a more stable home. If the father has disappeared in a single parent family, the child has to cope with feelings of rejection and anger.
