Define the Maghrib (also Maghreb) [“the place where the sun sets”] and the Mashriq [“where the sun rises”—the eastern Arab world]. What is Andalusia?
What will be an ideal response?
• The Maghrib includes Arab countries in the western part of Northern Africa—Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
• The Mashriq includes Egypt, Sudan, and the other countries in the eastern Arab world that are east of Egypt and north of the Arabian Peninsula—see question #1 above.
• Andalusia is the area where the Arab, Islamic empire extended north into Europe from 711 until the Spanish Inquisition in 1515. "[A] diverse civilization developed in Andalusia, anchored by court centers in Granada, Córdoba, and Seville that boasted a rich artistic life."
