- Whenever possible, select a topic in which you are interested or about which you know something, want to speak, need to speak, or are personally concerned.
- Select a worthwhile subject of potential concern to your audience.
- Select a topic with a goal for influence or action.
- Persuasive speeches often, but not always, deal with topics for which two or more opposing viewpoints exist and occur in situations in which the speaker's point of view differs from that of the audience.
