* Dextrose — a source of carbohydrates or sugar, used to provide the patient with calories and energy
* Amino acids — a source of protein, used to build, maintain, and replace body tissues
* Lipids — a source of fat, used to provide calories and energy storage
* Sterile water — used to adjust the volume of the TPN
Additives:
* Electrolytes — maintain nerve and muscle function, water balance of cells, proper blood pressure, proper blood volume, pH of body fluids, bone formation and maintenance, muscle contraction, blood clotting, fighting infection, and proper heart function (include sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, calcium, and magnesium)
* Trace elements — for growth and development (include zinc, copper, manganese, and chromium)
* Vitamins
