What is gestational diabetes?

What will be an ideal response?

Gestational diabetes occurs in pregnant women who have high blood glucose levels and no history of diabetes prior to pregnancy. It affects about 4% of all pregnant women, usually later in the pregnancy. This form of diabetes is similar to Type 2 in that the glucose intolerance is caused by insulin resistance. After the birth of the baby, the high blood sugars usually resolve. Gestational diabetes does leave the mother with a 20-60% higher risk for going on to develop Type 2 diabetes. The symptoms and treatment are similar to the other types of diabetes.
