The story of the Bisclavret constructs the civility of the city and its inhabitants and contrasts that with the wildness of the forest and wilderness. In doing so, the short story upholds the chivalric tradition and exotic superstitions. Buddhism was carried from India by monks on the Silk Road, the great trading route. The emphasis on the textual tradition influenced its spread as important Buddhist texts were translated into Chinese and then into other languages. In the context of Southeast Asia, visual and material culture were integral in the spread of Buddhism as Buddhist art and architecture were integrated in the subcontinent. The spread of Buddhism was further aided by Buddhism’s compatibility with Daoism in China, where leaders absorbed different elements of Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism and where Chan Buddhism also developed. In Tibet, the religion adapted to the native mystical religion known as Bon. Buddhism merged with Shintoism in Japan.
