List the five functions of language

What will be an ideal response?

First, language helps us communicate our ideas. This is one of the things that
separates us from animals. Second, language sends messages about its users. Our vocabulary
reveals our educational level, background, age, and sometimes place of origin. Word selection
communicates to others how we feel about the listener and/or the subject we are discussing.
Third, language strengthens social bonds. Language can be used to identify with a group, or to
communicate unity, as when a church group or kindergarten class speaks in unison. Fourth,
language serves as an instrument of play. Our language is entertaining. Finally, language
helps us check with listeners to see whether our message is clearly understood. Denotative
language has the most clarity, as it involves using agreedupon, dictionary definitions of
words.
