Explain the sentence, "The hematocrit may be increased due to hemoconcentration if third spacing has occurred."

What will be an ideal response?

The hematocrit is a percentage of the blood that is composed of red cells. As the fluid portion of the blood decreases without a concomitant reduction in red cells, the percentage of blood represented by red cells will increase. Hemoconcentration refers to a reduction in fluid without a reduction in red cells. Bleeding causes a concomitant reduction in all components of blood (fluid and cellular) but "third spacing" causes only the fluid to leave the intravascular space, leaving behind relatively more red cells.
