Answers will vary. The builders provided additional space for the pilgrims, worshipers and liturgical processions. By lengthening the nave; doubling the side aisles; extending the aisles around the eastern end forming an ambulatory; and attaching a series of radiating chapels which opened into the ambulatory and the transept. In addition, upper galleries, or tribunes, built over the inner aisle and opening onto the nave accommodated the overflow crowds on special occasions.
