A symbol is something that stands for something else. Examples of symbols include
pictures, objects, and the names of things, people, and events. Words are symbols that are
conventionally agreed upon to represent certain things, people, and events. Words simplify the
amount of information needed to communicate and enable us to communicate about abstract
concepts or things that are not physically present.
