The three-stage process of sociocultural evolution for organizations includes: enactment, selection, and retention. In the enactment stage, organizational members become aware of ambiguous or equivocal information. This leads to the second stage, selection. Here organizational members must decide or select how they will reduce the message’s ambiguity. They can use rules and follow pre-existing guidelines or they can use a double interact which involves communicating about the equivocal message and adjusting to create a new response. The last stage is retention, or organizational memory. Whatever was done to reduce the equivocality will be stored or remembered for future use
